Unlock Your Tesla with a Flick of the Wrist: Musk Teases Apple Watch Integration

Tesla owners, get ready for an exciting update that might just make your day a little more convenient. Elon Musk, the visionary CEO behind Tesla, has hinted at a new feature that could allow Model 3, Y, S, X, and even Cybertruck owners to unlock their vehicles using an Apple Watch. Responding to a user’s request on X, Musk’s simple reply, “Sure,” has sparked anticipation among the Tesla community and tech enthusiasts alike.

Currently, Tesla vehicles can be unlocked through the brand’s main app available on Android and iOS devices or by using the key card provided with the car. For those looking for a bit more flair, Tesla also offers a key fob for the Model 3 and Y for $175, which is included with the S and X models. However, the prospect of an official Apple Watch app opens up new possibilities for convenience and accessibility.

While there are third-party applications that offer similar functionality, they require sharing access to your Tesla account, which might not be everyone’s cup of tea. Alternatively, creating a Siri Shortcut based on the Tesla app’s support for iOS automation can achieve a similar result, allowing owners to lock or unlock their vehicles via voice command or a button press on their Apple Watch.

Musk’s casual affirmation suggests that an official Tesla Apple Watch app could be in the works, potentially offering not just locking and unlocking capabilities but also control over the vehicle’s “frunk,” trunk, and temperature settings. This integration would undoubtedly enhance the Tesla ownership experience, adding a layer of tech-savvy elegance to the electric vehicle lifestyle.

While Rivian, another player in the electric vehicle market, has mentioned plans for an Apple Watch app, it has yet to materialize. In the meantime, Rivian has updated its iOS app to support Live Activities, enabling users to monitor their vehicle’s charging status directly from the iPhone’s Lock Screen or the Dynamic Island feature on newer models. Such functionality would also be a welcome addition for Tesla drivers, further blending the worlds of automotive innovation and wearable technology.

As we await further details, Tesla and Apple Watch enthusiasts can only hope that Musk’s “Sure” transforms into reality sooner rather than later. An official announcement or update would not only fulfill a long-standing request from the community but also reaffirm Tesla’s commitment to integrating cutting-edge technology into their vehicles, making the electric driving experience even more seamless and connected.
